Rohnert Park
One of California's first master-planned communities — designed for good living, good neighbors, and good times in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country since 1962.
A Planned Paradise in Wine Country
Rohnert Park stands apart from every other city in California — because it was designed that way from the very beginning. Laid out in the 1950s on former hop fields and farmland, it became one of the nation's earliest master-planned residential communities, complete with neighborhood parks, curving streets, and that distinctly optimistic postwar California spirit.
The land has deep roots. Originally home to the Coast Miwok people, it later became part of the Mexican-era Rancho Cotate, granted to Captain Juan Castañeda in 1844. When the U.S. Route 101 freeway bypass opened through Sonoma County in the mid-1950s, developer Paul Rohr saw the opportunity to build something new — a complete community from scratch.
On a summer day in 1962, residents voted to incorporate, making Rohnert Park the first new city in Sonoma County since 1905. Today its neighborhoods east of Highway 101 are still organized by letter — sections A through M, R, S, and W — a living map of that original 1950s vision.
City Timeline
Why People Love It Here
Heart of Wine Country
More than 250 Sonoma County wineries surround the city. Rohnert Park sits at the crossroads of Sonoma Valley, Petaluma, and the Russian River wine regions — all within a short drive.
30 Min to the Coast
The dramatic Sonoma Coast, with its rugged cliffs, state beaches, and tidepools, is just 30 minutes west. Bodega Bay and Doran Beach are local favorites.
University Town
Sonoma State University anchors the city's east side — a 269-acre campus with 62 bachelor's programs, a world-class music center, and a lively arts and events scene.
Parks Everywhere
With over 473 acres of parks — roughly 10.9 acres per 1,000 residents — Rohnert Park lives up to the promise of its planned-community roots. Crane Creek Regional Park alone offers 3.5 miles of trails.
Graton Resort & Casino
Opened in 2013 by the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, the resort features 3,000 slot machines, 144 table games, a hotel, spa, and multiple restaurants — all in Rohnert Park.
Arts & Performance
The Green Music Center at SSU and Spreckels Performing Arts Center bring world-class performances to Sonoma County year-round. Cal Skate, Double Decker Lanes, and Scandia keep families entertained too.
The Planned Neighborhoods
One of Rohnert Park's most distinctive features is its lettered neighborhood system — a signature of its 1950s master-plan origin. Residential sections east of Highway 101 are each identified by letter, creating a unique civic identity that no other California city shares.
